7 ACTS OF MERCY-CONSTRUCT THE MOMENT

After our speculative design project we formed groups and chose a member of the group's design to construct. My design was chosen so as well as constructing the set I got to be the designer in the project. I had to make some adjustments to my model to fit the space requirements of the area in theatre that we had. The construction process taught me how to assemble scaffolding, build flats, I was inducted on and learnt how to use the woodwork equipment in the workshop, properly use powertools and safety requirements of a set. We also worked with a professional scenic painter who taught us how to create wood grain and to paint stone. We used both of these effects in our set, along with other painting techniques we picked up. I mainly worked on the painting the stone floor, the wooden floorboards, the brickwork and breaking down elements by creating rust effects on scaffolding and using a spray gun to make the set look dirty and worn. This project was so important to me because I developed so many new valuable skills and also got to experience something I had designed become a full scale set.
